Why eating breakfast is like getting dressed!

Isn’t it SO much easier to remember information — and to motivate yourself to actually use that info — when you can relate to it? So, as inspiration to eat a start the day with a healthy b-fast, we’re relating it to something we all do daily…get dressed! To see what we ate for breakfast this morning, check out our Twitter feed, @CJNutrition .

Eating breakfast is like getting dressed because…

  1. Each piece goes together in a complementary way: You don’t put on 2 pairs of shoes, or 3 pairs of jeans, each morning but neglect to wear a shirt! So don’t include just one type of food with your breakfast. For instance, cute shoes, a skirt, shirt, and accessories = healthy carbs, protein, fruit, and healthy fat. Try a whole grain toaster waffle with nonfat Greek yogurt, berries, and sliced almonds.
  2. It’s easier, faster, and you usually feel more confident when you plan it the night before: Spend time trying on different combos, ironing, etc. the night before and you don’t need to worry so much (or spend so much time) in the morning. Plan ahead breakfast: Spread a whole wheat tortilla with peanut butter, toss in some sliced pear or apple, sprinkle with cinnamon, roll up and wrap in foil and all you have to do in the morning is grab it from the fridge and go.
  3. Thrifty can be chic: Sometimes, your favorite shirt, skirt, bracelet, etc. is the one you found on sale at some random place. Just because something is expensive, doesn’t mean it’s perfect and just because something is less expensive doesn’t mean it isn’t. Other times, you combine thrifty fun pieces with pricier basics to make the perfect outfit. It’s all about personal taste. So is breakfast. You may choose to spend a little more on organic eggs because they taste great and you feel good about eating them, but buy the store brand of whole wheat bread. Choose ingredients you love the taste of and that make you feel great and go for it — no super pricey items needed. Try an organic egg fried with cooking spray on top of whole wheat toast topped with hummus, goat cheese, and tomato. Or opt for spoon-size shredded wheat with nonfat milk, berries, and walnuts.
