When looking back on my childhood, it’s hard to imagine a time where scrunchies did not play a significant role in my personal sense of style. Those infamously bulky and often colorful hair pieces were as crucial to my “look” as neon and french braids. But then again, who didn’t wear scrunchies? My mom even used to customize ours and add charms, puffy paint, and cool designs.
I’d have to say that DJ Tanner is to blame for my love affair with scrunchies — well “blame” is probably the wrong choice of wording. I meant “thank”. Back in the late 80s/early 90s, scrunchies were all the rage. DJ wasn’t the only super cool teen TV star to rock them — Kelly Kapowski, the original teen queen goddess was often seeing pairing them with her notorious off the shoulder sweatshirts or Bayside cheerleading outfits. So it’s safe to say if Kelly wore them, then it’s a fact that scrunchies were all the rage.
As you can see in the photo above, I still don a scrunchie from time to time. Don’t hate. They’re going to make a comeback… I know it.
