On our second day in Liberia we visited an orphanage at the end of a windy, pothole ridden road that would normally take about five minutes to get to, but because of the potholes it took us about a half hour. We were greeted by beautiful, smiling children that immediately jumped on our truck. The orphanage is run by a reverend and his wife who took in 38 kids abandoned from circumstances created by the war. They are the definition of angels. We were sung to, spoken to and showered with love. We then got taken on a tour of their horribly uncomfortable housing structure. Thirty-eight kids and their parents share three extremely small bedrooms and two “showers”. Clearly no running water, they retrieve from a well that they think a skeleton lies at the bottom of. Needless to say what we witnessed was beyond sad but the kids did not seem to know any better and they were among some of the happiest kids I have ever met.
